Rahul Gandhi Leads Congress Day-Long Fast Today To 'Protect Communal Harmony'

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday led a day-long fast in front of the VIP Gate of the Mahatma Gandhi Samadhi at Rajghat to promote and protect communal harmony across the nation.

The ‘Sadbhavna Upvas’ fast is being observed by all state and district headquarters, while Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) President Ajay Maken and other senior leaders will be joining Rahul Gandhi in the fast at Delhi's Rajghat.

The Congress party's fast comes exactly 1 week after the Bharat Bandh protests conducted nation-wide by the Dalit community in protest of the dilution of the SC/ST Act by the Supreme Court. The clashes on Bharat Bandh led to the death of 9 people, but despite the government filing a review petition with the apex court on the SC/ST Act, the earlier directive was not withdrawn.

The Rahul Gandhi-led fast in New Delhi is also in protest of the government's alleged failure to discuss key issues in the recently concluded Budget Session of Parliament, such as the multi-crore Punjab National Bank scam, Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh, Cauvery water management board establishment and the CBSE exam paper leaks.

Meanwhile, PM Modi has announced a fast by BJP MPs on April 12 against the impasse in Parliament due to repeat protests and adjournments, for which he blamed the Opposition. NDA MPs also announced earlier that they would be foregoing their salary for the 23 days that the Parliament did not function, a move that was called as a 'gimmick' by the Opposition.
