Bypolls in Uttar Pradesh's Kairana were stalled due to a technical malfunction in EVMs-VVPATs on Monday. The Election Commission (EC) has now ordered re-polling for the parliamentary constituency on Wednesday at 73 polling booths, an official said.

The Opposition and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had jointly alleged that the electronic voting machines at these polling booths were faulty and that could have a bearing on the free and fair outcome of the balloting.

After receiving multiple complaints of EVM disturbances, Uttar Pradesh's Chief Electoral Officer L.Venkateshwar Lu had said, "I want to assure political parties that the EVM machines are being changed."

Re-polling will be held on 30 May between 7 am and 5 pm, during which 80,000 voters are likely to exercise their franchise in 23 polling stations at Nakur, 44 in Gangoh and one at Thana Bhawan in Saharanpur and five in Shamli.

A total of 54 percent polling was recorded on Monday in Kairana seat, which fell vacant with the death of Bharatiya Janata Party MP Hukum Singh. In 2014, 73 percent voting was recorded.
