Air pollution is a serious problem as it leads to respiratory disorders and complications, and the country as a whole is making efforts to reduce sources of air pollution. While people may consider the metros of the nation to be the most polluted, recent reports have revealed that this year Rajasthan's Bhiwadi is the most polluted city in the country.

According to a report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Bhiwadi, located in Alwar, is the most polluted city followed by Kolkata in second position and Agra at third. Last year, Agra was the most polluted city.

The increased air pollution in Bhiwadi has been attributed to the industries which emit harmful smoke, compounded by firecracker bursting on Diwali.

After Diwali, CPCB noted that the Air Quality Index (AQI), showing that the level of pollution in Bhiwadi was 425 micrograms per cubic metre, in Kolkata 358 micrograms per cubic metre and in Agra was 332 micrograms per cubic metre.

Concerned over the increasing levels of pollution in Bhiwadi, the National Green Tribunal had closed down factories that were contributing to the pollution, but the pollution levels continue to rise. The impact of the pollution is also becoming visible in the health of residents.

Soon after Diwali, doctors and specialists in lung and respiratory diseases confirmed an increase in the number of patients, largely due to the pollution levels.

With a goal to reduce air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court had banned the sale of firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR area on Diwali.
