Portuguese Embassy Officials Meet Convicted Gangster Abu Salem In Taloja Prison

The Deputy Head of Portugal Embassy, Delhi along with officials of Central Bureau of Investigation visited Abu Salem in the Taloja Jail, Navi Mumbai on Tuesday. The team met the convicted gangster after repeated complaints by him about the facilities given to him in prison.

Salem was recently sentenced to seven-year imprisonment by Delhi court in an extortion case. Salem was deported from Portugal in 2005, was convicted for the conspiracy in causing the March 12, 1993, serial RDX Mumbai blast. The attack killed 257 and 713 were injured. He was given a life sentence by special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act.

The team of embassy and CBI officials reached the Taloja Jail at 11:45 am and the meeting went on till 2 pm. The meeting took place in presence of IG Prisons Rajvardhan Sinha, Taloja jail superintendent Sadanand Gaikwad and Salem’s lawyer Saba Qureshi.

Salem dressed up in his white uniform complained about lack of light, food, ventilation and many more issues in the jail.

The convicted gangster in his statement said, "I have been kept in isolation. There is no one to talk to or interact all day. It is like mental harassment, to just keep looking at the walls. Just because of security reasons should I be kept like this in isolation?'' Salem further said that the quality of food and condition of toilet and bathroom was inappropriate.

Salem has requested the officials to shift him to Uttar Pradesh jail as his family finds it difficult to come and meet him from Azamgarh
