Barely days after the Hizbul Mujahideen militant group threatened security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir to either resign or die, 3 policemen were abducted and killed on Friday in the Shopian district of south Kashmir by terrorists. A fourth Jammu and Kashmir policeman, who was also kidnapped with the others, was released.

The police officers that were killed have been identified as Special Police Officers (SPOs) Firdous Ahmad Kuchey, Kuldeep Singh and Nisar Ahmad Dhobi, while Nisar's brother Fayaz Ahmad Bhat was released. All 4 of the police officers had been dragged out of their homes by militants in Kapran and Batagund villages.

According to a home ministry official, "Terrorist are under pressure as they are not able to execute anything big. Protest politics and stone-pelting has come down. So they are taking out their frustration by targeting policemen in their houses."

Police suspect that militants from the Hizbul Mujahideen group are behind the abduction and murders since the group had on September 18 issued a video warning security forces in Jammu Kashmir to resign from their jobs within 4 days or 'get ready to be killed'.

The video, released a day after an Army jawan was shot dead by the Hizbul, depicted a collage of images of Jammu and Kashmir police, warned both paramilitary and local police to submit their resignations or 'face the consequences'.

"Upload your resignations on the internet or face the consequences," the local head of Umar Majeed group, an offshoot of Hizbul Mujahideen, is heard saying.

In August this year, 3 policemen and 8 relatives of police personnel were kidnapped by terrorists in south Kashmir after the Jammu and Kashmir police had arrested a dozen family members of terrorists. The policemen and their family members were released after the police released family members of the terrorists, sparking controversy. Soon after, SP Vaid was replaced from his position as Jammu Kashmir police DGP.
