A month after the family of an 8-year-old nomad girl filed a missing report for their daughter from Jammu's Kathua district and weeks after her dead body was found after she was brutally raped and murdered, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Crime Branch has found the culprit.

Notably, the Special Police Officer (SPO) called Deepak Khujaria who was appointed for tracing the little girl has been alleged of carrying out the crime. The young officer has been taken into police custody post SIT found solid evidence signalling his involvement in the case.

The SPO was arrested from the Heera Nagar Police Station of Kathua district in Jammu division where he was stationed. Some sources suggest that the motive behind the brutal murder of the little girl was to instil fear among the members of area's tribal community.

Earlier, a teenager was arrested in the case before it was shifted to the Crime branch. The Police are now suggesting that the underage boy along with Khujaria have raped and murdered the 8-year-old. After being kidnapped from the Rasana village on January 10, victim's disfigured body was found on January 17.

Alok Puri, the Additional Director General of Police, Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir confirmed, "We have clinching evidence about his (Deepak Khajuria's) involvement. There was the motive and we have evidence as well."

Khajuria has reportedly confessed to committing the crime after a confrontation with the Police evidence. Surprisingly, the SPO was among the team members who searched for the nomad girl after her family filed a missing report at Heera Nagar police station.

"He was also part of the search party but he was not investigating the case. Now we know what was the motive," said Puri. The further investigation revealed that the kidnapping and rape of the girl were pre-planned. Nomads have been demanding justice for their community member by sitting on the protest.

Nomads claim of knowing the true culprit from the beginning. Authorities suggest that more people could be involved in the crime and Deepak has been threatening his young accomplice, who was arrested earlier to remain tight-lipped about his name.
