Two terrorists were killed and a police constable martyred during an encounter between terrorists and security forces in the Bandipora district of north Kashmir on Sunday morning.

Following intelligence reports of terrorists in the area, security forces cordoned off the Mir Mohalla village of the Hajin area in the Bandipora district and launched a search operation, during which terrorists opened fire on them resulting in a gun battle.

“The security forces started the search at around 6.25am and the militants opened fire from a house at around 8 am,” an official from the Bandipora police control room said.

The cordon and search operation was carried out by the troops of the 45 Bn Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Special Operations Group (SOG) and 13 Rashtriya Rifles (RR).

In the encounter, Jammu and Kashmir constable Zahir Abbas was martyred, a police official said.

The Bandipora encounter marks the first gun battle in Kashmir since the central government relaunched the dialogue process with the state less than a week ago by the appointment of former Intelligence Bureau chief Dineshwar Sharma as the interlocutor to Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the appointment of Dineshwar Sharma as interlocutor, the Army Chief General Bipin Rawat had asserted that there would be no change in the Army's policies in the valley.

Previously, on October 11, another encounter took place in Bandipora's Hajin where two Indian Air Force commandos training with the army were killed along with 2 militants in an intense gunfight.
