Once again a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader has landed in controversy, this time, Umar Khalid, who along with Gujarat-based Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani was arrested by the Pune police under sections 153(A), 505 and 117 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

An event that the duo were expected to speak at in Mumbai's Vile Parle on Thursday was also cancelled, leading to protests. Jignesh Mevani, MLC Kapil Patel and student activists Umar Khalid and Richa Singh had been scheduled to participate in the All India Students Summit 2018, an event organised by the students' group 'Chatra Bharati'. The police, however, denied permission for the event.

"Umar Khalid and Jignesh Mevani have been invited at this event here, this had been fixed earlier," said Sagar Bhalerao of the Chhatra Bharati.

"Had booked Bhaidas Hall for All India National Students' Summit here on Thursday, but now we are being denied entry. Reason police is citing is the news doing the rounds about Umar Khalid and Jignesh Mevani for the past few days," he added.

Based on their statements, an FIR was filed against Mevani and Khalid on Thursday under sections 153(A), 505 and 117 of the Indian Penal Code.

Section 153 (A) refers to promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion, race, residence etc and Section 505 refers to statements intended to cause mischief, intended to incite, or likely to incite, any class or community of persons to commit any offence.
