A police complaint has been registered against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for inciting 'hate and tension' among co-existing communities with an intention of derailing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, media reported on Wednesday.

The NRC released by Assam on Monday was harshly condemned by Banerjee as 40 lakh people were found to be missing from the final draft, although more than 2 crore were on the list. The West Bengal CM even claimed that the list would lead to a civil war.

"The NRC is being done with a political motive. We will not let this happen. They (BJP) are trying to divide the people. The situation cannot be tolerated. There will be a civil war, blood bath in the country," said Banerjee during her visit to New Delhi.

After Banerjee's comments, an FIR was filed against her in Assam's Dibrugarh district by 3 workers of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP , accusing her of inciting hate and tension.

The final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the state of Assam was released on Monday, according to which 2.89 crore people have been found eligible out of the total 3.29 crore applicants, the state NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela said.

The government has however made it clear that the list is only a draft and that no action will be taken against those residents who are not on the list.

The NRC draft list will be available to the public on August 7 and those applicants not on the list can file claims from August 30 to September 28, the Supreme Court said on Tuesday.
