Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday led the International Yoga celebrations from Dehradun's Forest Research Institute, with the participation of 50,000 volunteers.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had in 2015 declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga, based on the suggestion of PM Modi, since June 21 is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

The Yoga celebrations in Dehradun began early morning with an address by PM Modi.

"In today's fast changing time, Yoga binds together a person's body, brain and soul, hence making one experience a feeling of peace," PM Modi said.

"In a world of excess, yoga promises restraint and balance. In a world suffering from mental stress, it promises calm. In a distracted world, it helps focus. In a world of fear, it promises hope, strength and courage," he said.

"From Dehradun to Dublin, Shanghai to Chicago, Jakarta to Johannesburg, there is Yoga and Yoga. Yoga has become one of the unifying forces of the world," said PM Modi.

"The world has embraced Yoga and glimpses of this can be seen in the manner in which International Day of Yoga has been marked every year. Infact, Yoga Day has become one of the biggest mass movements in the quest for good health and well-being," he said.

"Yoga is beautiful because it is ancient yet modern, it is constant yet evolving. It has the best of our past and presents and a ray of hope for our future. In Yoga, we have the perfect solution to the problems we face, either as individuals or in our society," the PM said.

"The way to lead a calm, creative and content life is Yoga. It can show the way in defeating tensions and mindless anxiety. Instead of dividing, Yoga unites. Instead of further animosity, Yoga assimilates. Instead of increasing suffering, Yoga heals," PM Modi said.

For the first International Yoga Day in 2015, PM Modi had led the celebrations from New Delhi, followed by Chandigarh in 2016 and Lucknow in 2017.

Meanwhile Union Minister Rajnath Singh participate in yoga events in Lucknow, Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur, Suresh Prabhu in Chennai, Uma Bharti in Rudraprayag, Ram Vilas Paswan in Hajipur and Ravi Shankar Prasad in Patna.
