In lines with his rural electrification campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched 'Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Yojna-Saubhagya' in order to ensure electricity reaches every willing household.

News Agency ANI reported, "PM Modi launches Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli har Ghar Yojna-Saubhagya scheme."

Under this scheme, the government, among other benefits, will provide free electricity to the people of socially and economically backward classes.

The Prime Minister announced that electricity connections under this scheme can be purchased for a mere price of Rs 500, even for general customers.

The Prime Minister launching the scheme said, "Electricity has not reached 4 crore families in India."

He said, "In those homes, there are no bulbs. They still have candles. Children have to study under the light of a lantern."

“It becomes tough to go out in the dark. It is important for us to understand what life is like without electricity. The life of poor will only improve when they get electricity,” he added.

This comes as a major move by the government in order to fulfil its campaign promises in the 2014 elections. On the other hand, this is also a huge boost for the government's resolve to electrify the entire country by May 2018.

Under this scheme, the government will provide free electricity to people holding the Below Poverty Line (BPL) card, while people above the poverty line can also purchase the connection and pay for the electricity in EMIs.

The government has also set a deadline to bring electricity to every household by March 29, 2019. This will mean the electrification of 3 crore household in over 18,000 villages across India.

State governments will also bear a part in the outlaid Rs 16,320 crore fund for the scheme.
