The death of senior journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh on Tuesday night resulted in a flurry of reactions on Twitter, while most condemned the death of the Bengaluru based writer, others had not so positive comments on her death.

One person, in particular, tweeted on Lankesh's death in degrading language. Although many people on Twitter use less than appropriate language on the microblogging site, since the concerned person was followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his tweet went viral. PM Modi was later slammed for following a person who would write objectionable language publically on the death of a person.

Coming to the defence of the PM, Amit Malviya, BJP's head of Information and Technology said that PM Modi following someone on Twitter is not a character certificate to that person and called the entire controversy mischievous and contorted.

"The controversy over Prime Minister following people on Twitter is mischievous and contorted. PM Modi is the only leader who freely engages with people on social media platforms," Malviya said in a statement.

"He follows normal people and frequently interacts with them on various issues. He is a rare leader who truly believes in freedom of speech and has never blocked or unfollowed anyone on Twitter," he added.

"PM following someone is not a character certificate of a person and is not in any way a guarantee of how a person would conduct himself."

"PM still follows Parthesh Patel, a former BJP volunteer who joined Congress and abused PM in the worst possible language," Malviya added.
