Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to families of the 39 killed in Iraq's Mosul.

The mortal remains of 38 of the 39 Indians killed in Iraq were brought back on Monday by a special aircraft. Minister of State for External Affairs General V K Singh, who left for Iraq on Sunday, accompanied the bodies.

One body could not be brought back for now as the DNA testing had only provided a 70 percent match. Of the 39 Indians killed, 27 belonged to Punjab. Four were from Himachal Pradesh, six from Bihar and two from West Bengal.

Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the kin of deceased. One member from each of the family would be given a government job in Punjab. Apart from that, Rs 20,000 monthly financial compensation would also continue, he said.

In Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi and other members of the state Cabinet received the bodies at the airport and laid wreaths at the coffins.

Kumar announced ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of each of the deceased.

Earlier the government had stated that these 40 Indians had gone to Iraq through illegal travel agents as the Indian embassy did not have any record of them.

V.K. had said that compensating the families of the victims ''is not like distributing biscuits''.

Some relatives of the Iraq victims demanded that the Government of India must provide jobs to the families of the deceased so that they can manage their survival.

The government was previously uncertain on giving compensation to the families of deceased and this led to Punjab Congress MPs to protest in Parliament demanding financial help for their families.
