Four patients admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of Kanpur’s Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College were allegedly killed by the breakdown of the air conditioning system on Thursday night.

The hospital principal Navneet Kumar has meanwhile denied reports of the deaths taking place due to air conditioning failure.

“Two deaths occurred due to cardiac arrest, and the other two due to chronic illness; AC plant to be repaired soon,” he said.

“We have two air-conditioning units of 10 tonne and 16 tonne each. Some glitches had occurred earlier, which we got fixed immediately. However, last night there was a breakdown but we are getting it repaired,” the hospital principal said.

Meanwhile, kin of patients have alleged that they were not even allowed to use fans.

“The air-conditioners here hardly work. In the entire day, it is functional for probably two hours, especially when the doctors are on a round. We have even sought permission to install fans for our ailing relative but they did not allow us to do so,” a kin of a patient said to News18.

Around 11 people, including 4 children were admitted in the ward of the  state-run hospital.

After the incident, remaining patients have been shifted to other hospitals, while district magistrate Surendra Singh has directed officials to install 2 air-conditioners sent by him immediately. Singh has also ordered a probe into the incident.
