Padma Shri Award-Winning Actor Tom Alter Passes Away At Age 67

The multi-talented actor Tom Alter, who was also a writer and director and recipient of Padma Shri for his contributions to art and culture, passed away on Friday night at the age of 67 due to skin cancer.

A statement released on behalf of his family said: "It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father. Tom passed away Friday night at home with his family and close family members in attendance. We ask for their privacy to be respected at this time."

Initially, Tom Alter had been treated for the skin cancer last year which went into remission, however, earlier this month his condition relapsed with stage 4 skin cancer.

Tom Alter's son Jamie had spoken to news agencies earlier this month, when Tom was admitted to the Saifee Hospital, and said, "It is what is called a squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer). It is a relapse of the same thing which had happened last year and unfortunately, for various reasons, it was not detected at that time and has come back."

Born in 1950 in Mussoorie, Tom Alter was a versatile actor having appeared in films, TV shows and theatre, although his maximum work was in films. During his career, he appeared in more than 300 films and also had 16 unreleased films at the time of his death. Apart from Hindi, Tom also acted in Assamese, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil and Kumaoni films.

Famous films from Tom's career include Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977), Kranti (1981), Gandhi (1982), Parinda (1989) and Aashiqui (1990), while his TV shows included Junoon, Bharat Ek Khoj and Shaktimaan.

The famous actor was last seen in the film Sargoshiyan along with Alok Nath and Farida Jalal and his last apperance on the small screen was in the show Rishton Ka Chakravyuh.

Tom Alter was awarded the Padma Shri in 2008.
