More than 30,000 farmers and adivasis from Maharashtra reached the border of Mumbai on Sunday, as they make their way to protest outside the Maharashtra assembly where the budget session is underway in Mumbai to present their demands.

Among the demands are a complete loan waiver, remunerative prices for agricultural produce and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission. The Left-affiliated All India Kisan Sabha protestors began their 180km journey from Nashik on Tuesday evening, travelling around 30 km per day.

Senior Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde on Friday night visited the protestors and welcomed them, clarifying that he came with a message by party chief Uddhav Thackeray and not as a cabinet minister of the Maharashtra Government. The Nationalist Congress Party and the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena also extended support to the protesting farmers and adivasis.

Although the All India Kisan Sabha welcomed everyone to join the protests, it questioned why the Shiv Sena had only encouragement to offer, considering that it was an ally in the government.

"It's sad the Sena has only offered support. Their presence and the support is welcome but he (Mr Shinde) is a member of the government. Only support is not fair. You call yourselves tigers. When will you use your claws for farmers interests?" Ajit Nawale from the All India Kisan Sabha said.

Despite the protestors carrying red flags, the organisers said that the protest should not be branded as communist as it was for a common cause, not confined to the Left alone.

The corrupt and greedy politicians of this country are only giving fringe benefits to farmers on the eve of elections. No honest and sincere efforts are made by past Congress govt in last 60 years to solve critical problems of farmers. The same fraudulent tactics were applied by all other political parties subsequently on eve of elections by making false promises to farmers. The people of the country are also responsible since they are voting for corrupt and greedy political parties time and again in elections. This must be stopped forthwith to teach the lesson to fraud and corrupt politicians of this country by ousting them from power like Congress which has seized to power in only five states. Similar action is needed against BJP also who failed to curb CORRUPTION in spite of promises made by all BJP TOP LEADERS which is not acceptable to people of this country in any circumstances. CORRUPTION IS BIGGEST HURDLE IN PROGRESS OF COUNTRY WHICH IS NOT ELIMINATED BY ANY OF POLITICAL PARTIES OF THE COUNTRY SO FAR. A few opposition parties are shedding crocodile tears on problems of farmers for political gain as the election is nearer.
