Over 14,000 Civilian Bunkers To Be Built Along LoC, IB In Jammu And Kashmir

Frequent ceasefire violations and attacks by militants have put the lives of civilians living near the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir at risk. In an attempt to provide more safety for border residents, over 14,000 community and individual bunkers are to be constructed along the LoC and IB.

The Centre has sanctioned the construction of 14,460 individual and community bunkers at a cost of Rs 415.73 crore for border residents. While 7298 bunkers would be constructed along the LoC in the districts of Poonch and Rajouri, 7162 underground bunkers would be constructed along the IB in Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts.

The capacity each individual bunker is 8 people, and the capacity of each community bunker is 40 people. Officials said that 4918 individual and 372 community bunkers would be constructed in Rajouri, and 3076 individual and 243 community bunkers would be constructed in Kathua district. Similarly, 688 community and 1320 individual bunkers would be constructed in Poonch, 1200 individual and 120 community bunkers in Jammu, and 2515 individual and eight community bunkers in Samba district.

India shares a 3,323km length border with Pakistan, out of which 221km of the IB and 740km of the LoC fall in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the last year itself, 19 Army personnel, 12 civilians and 4 BSF personnel were killed in ceasefire violations by Pakistan.
