The Maharashtra government on Thursday announced a major relief for movie goers, passing a resolution to allow food inside movie theatres from August 1. The government will also hold meetings with multiplexes owners to reduce the prices of the food products in accordance with the market price.

Last month, the Bombay high court had directed the state to file an affidavit to form a policy on regulation of high prices at multiplexes.

Advocate Aditya Pratap hearing Jainendra Baxi petition regarding the right to carry food from home to cinema said, “Public must have freedom of choice to bring their own food, buy from stores or from outside the cinema hall. The fundamental right of multiplexes owner under Article 19 will not be affected in any way. ”

The bench hearing the petition further said, “We understand if the state can't permit the public to carry food from home. But, then why can't it step in and regulate the prices of food sold inside the cinema theatres,” quoted by ToI.

A big controversy also had happened on the grounds of high food prices at multiplexes when the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers thrashed a movie theatre manager during a protest over high prices of food items in a Pune theatre on June 28.
