Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Sunday appointed senior party leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy as the All Indian Congress Committee General Secretary In-charge of Andhra Pradesh. He will replace Digvijaya Singh.

The party does not have a single MLA in the 175-member Andhra Pradesh assembly. It has only one MLC in the entire state. Interestingly the last 3 Chief Ministers of United Andhra Pradesh (before its bifurcation into Andhra and Telangana) were from the Congress Party. The party faced a rout after the division of the state. In Telangana, the party was able to garner 13 assembly seats.

Oommen Chandy is a party veteran and has been part of the Congress party since he was a member of Kerala Students’ Union in his school days. He has won the legislative assembly elections 11 times since 1970 and served twice as the CM of Kerala.

Member of Parliament from Assam’s Kaliabor Loksabha, Gaurav Gogoi has been appointed AICC Secretary in-charge of the state of West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He replaces party General Secretary CP Joshi.

Gaurav Gogoi, a first-term MP is the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. He has been working closely with the Congress President and is seen as a young face of the party in the parliament along with his colleague from Assam Sushmita Dev who heads the All India Mahila Congress.
