The Kolkata Police has dismissed shocking reports from Sunday that said that dead bodies of 14 newborn babies had been found in plastic bags in an empty overgrown plot of land in Kolkata's southern fringe, saying that so far only medical waste has been found.

Nilanjan Biswas, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Haridevpur area where the incident took place said that after examination at a hospital it was found that there was no human tissue and "no sign of any human foetus" in the bags recovered.

"No human tissue was found in the packets when they were opened by doctors. Some dry ice is there. An examination is on for exact nature of the material," Biswas said.

“I spoke to the doctors there. We will conduct forensic tests of the material recovered. Our forensic team is looking into it,” he said.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee had sparked the rumours when he claimed that bodies of 14 newborn babies had been found wrapped in plastic while they were trying to clear the jungle on that unused plot of land.

"I was told in the morning by the local councillor Shoma Chakraborty that this area had turned into a jungle and while clearing it for development, several infants were found, wrapped in plastic, preserved with chemicals so there is no smell. The police commissioner came, the DC came. Till now bodies of 14 babies have been found," Chatterjee had said on record.

In the aftermath of the announcement that 14 dead bodies of newborns had been found, the police had launched a search for any possible abortion racket.

An official said that the plastic bags were found on the Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani under the Haridebpur Police station area when labourers were cleaning the patch.
