The opposition party is all set to nominate Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP and former Mayor of Pune Vandana Chavan for the post of Rajya Sabha Deputy Speaker slated for August 9.

Vandana Chavan is a second-time Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra. She was also a member of the state legislative council.

Meanwhile, NDA had picked Janata Dal-United MP and Nitish Kumar aide Harivansh Narayan Singh for the post.

It is learnt that Floor leaders of the opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha met on Tuesday afternoon in Parliament.

Speaking to media, Harivansh Narayan Singh said, "I got to know through the media that I am NDA's candidate for the post of Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. I express my gratitude to the parties in the NDA. I am hopeful that I will succeed."

Interestingly, Harivansh lost badly, getting just 26 votes on Monday in the balloting to fill two vacancies in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

When asked about his loss in PAC election, JDU MP said he fought it in his individual capacity.

He also said, "I am NDA's candidate (Deputy Chairman) and there will be much more support."

However, the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Shiv Sena are upset with reports of NDA deciding to nominate JDU MP and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar aide Harivansh for the contest.

According to media reports Bihar CM and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar communicated and requested Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to support his party and NDA candidate

Telangana CM K Chandrashekhar Rao had told his Bihar counterpart that he would "discuss with party colleagues and take a final decision on this soon".
