Nation Pays Tribute On Martyr's Day: 70th Death Anniversary Of Mahatma Gandhi

The date January 30, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is celebrated as Martyr's Day across India. This year, the country marks the 70th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation.

Lovingly called as Bapu, Mahatma Gandhi was the first who bought the concept of Satyagraha into the existence, against the British rule. Gandhi's journey in India began in 1917 when he launched Satyagraha from Champaran, Bihar, known as the first non-violent resistance to the British rule. He also launched other movements like Non-co-operation, Salt March, Non-violence.

Gandhi was shot dead 69 years ago on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse. His assassination is a matter of big grief of the entire nation.

In India, there are several days declared as Martyr's Day, in order to give the honour of those who are recognised as Martyrs of the nation. On this day people pay homage to the freedom fighters who fought for the freedom, welfare, progress of the nation and sacrificed their lives.
