Speaking at the launch of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor's new book ‘The Paradoxical Prime Minister’ on Friday, Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, "Narendra Modi is a “paradoxical Prime Minister” who has failed the electorate and eroded the voters’ faith in his promises.

“A fearful population, an economy that has been set back by foolhardy initiatives, a painful lack of jobs, growing distrust among India’s farming communities, a devastating number of farmer suicides, insecure borders, instability in Kashmir and the palpable failure in implementation of even laudable initiatives like Swachh Bharat, skill development, Make in India and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao… this is (what) the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi presides over," Singh said.

“He (Modi) has spoken of being a prime minister for all Indians but the government he presides over has mostly been silent in face of widespread communal violence, mob lynching, cow vigilantism. The environment of our universities and national institutions like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been vitiated," he added.

Petrol and Diesel prices are at historic high despite fall in international crude oil prices because Modi government chose to levy excessive excise duties instead of passing on the benefit of low prices to Indians, Singh said.
