Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met the family of late Dadaji Khobragade in Chandrapur, Maharashtra.

Dadaji Ramaji Khobragade was an Indian cultivator who invented a high-yielding variety of paddy (rice) and revolutionized rice farming in the country. Khobragade passed away a few weeks ago.

Around 1983, Khobragade noticed few spikes of a new variety of paddy in his farm, which he experimented on in the years to come. The new variety was found giving high yields as compared to the varieties available at that time. By 1990, the variety was given a name HMT.

According to National Innovation Foundation, “In 1990 Bhimrao Shinde, a large landowner in Nanded, bought 150 kilograms of seeds and sowed it in four acres of land. He obtained 90 bags of yield and sold the same to a trader from Talodi. The trader gave the name HMT to this variety as HMT watches were very popular at that time and he had recently acquired a new one. Ever since the name HMT had stuck.”

Congress President Rahul Gandhi arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday morning before his hearing at the magistrate court in Bhiwandi in the defamation case filed by a worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Gandhi upon his arrival in the state received a warm welcome by the party workers.

Charges have been framed against Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case for accusing RSS of killing Mahatma Gandhi. The court after the hearing on Tuesday morning had framed charges under section 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code.
