Mumbai: Cracks On Grant Road Bridge, Police Diverts Traffic

Yet another infrastructural failure in Mumbai was seen on Wednesday when a bridge in south Mumbai’s Grant Road was shut for traffic due to the development of cracks. It is just a day post the bridge collapse in the Andheri area of the city.

The bridge connects Nana Chowk on the west of the railway tracks to Novelty Cinema on the eastern side. The incident has led to slow-moving traffic in and around Kennedy Bridge.

Mumbai police tweeted, “The bridge at Grant road station has cracked, hence the traffic has been diverted to Nana Chowk towards Kennedy bridge.”

An engineer with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), who was present at the site while addressing the local media said, “The crack has been caused due to expansion, and we are inspecting it. After inspection, we will decide when to open the bridge.”

This comes a day after part of the Gokhale overhead bridge connecting Andheri East to Andheri West collapsed, injuring five people. Two of the injured are in intensive care at Cooper Hospital while the others suffered fractures. The Gokhale bridge collapse affected local train traffic on the western line as overhead wires were damaged.
