Six commuters were killed in Mumbai near the city’s suburban railway stations, the nodal foot over-bridge at the northern end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) came crashing down on Thursday evening.

CM of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured. “I have ordered a high-level inquiry. Such an incident raises questions about the audit,” he said.

Fadnavis also visited the spot to take a close look

Fadnavis expressed his condolence and tweeted “I have spoken to the BMC Commissioner and the police officials. Instructions have been given to ensure speedy relief efforts in coordination with the Indian railway.”

Prime minister Narendra Modi also expressed his deepest condolences and tweeted

Whereas, Police officials said personnel from all stations nearby had been called in for rescue work and crowd-control. “The remaining part of the bridge is being demolished to prevent it from collapsing, causing any more casualties,” a police officer at the site said. The arterial J J flyover, located just a few meters away from the site of the collapse, was closed to traffic from both ends.

The Himalaya Bridge locally known as ‘Kasab Bridge’ since it was used by the 26/11 terrorist to cross over to the railway station across the busy D.N. Road collapsed around 7.35 p.m.

According to the media reports, RTI documents reveal no major repairs were suggested for the bridge, whereas, the Bridge was barely 35 years old, and an average life of a bridge is 60- years reported also suggest BMC infuse 117 crores to railways.

A Central Railway spokesperson said, “The collapsed portion did connect the station but it was in the BMC area and constructed and maintained by the civic authorities.”

“We had never received any complaint regarding the structural stability. We only received complaints about broken tiles which we replaced. In fact, there was demand for an extra arm to this FOB,” Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner said to media.

The accident has now raised serious questions over the accuracy of the structural audit with the same consultant having audited several bridges in the city.

Late on Thursday, Mumbai police spokesperson DCP Manjunath Singe said the Azad Maidan police had registered an FIR for death due to negligence.

Sources added that the FIR was filed against “concerned Railway and BMC officers” and the names of specific accused would be added after further investigations.

In a shocking tragedy , 6 persons were killed and over 30 injured when on 14 March 2019 , foot over under repair bridge outside CSMT in Mumbai collapsed. Pray for peace to the departed souls , speedy recovery of the injured and necessary spiritual strength to loved ones of the deceased. Nation expects that an impartial , time –bound speedy and objective targeted inquiry will be held and those found responsible brought to justice without fail. However , readers may like to refer to this Vedic astrology writer’s predictive alerts for more care and appropriate strategy in vulnerable States or regions through hitherto well-known article - “ The Year 2019 Astrologically for India” - published last year on 7 October , 2018 at theindiapost.com. The text in the article impliedly related to the said tragedy reads like this :- “ February -March 2019. These nearly two months appear to be calling for more care and appropriate strategy in relation to more than one front………………………..Similar alertness may be exercised while driving on road - rail - or air. Some major accidents on road -rail -air or landslide cannot be ruled out”. Later and separately since November – December 2018 , the predictive alert was brought more closer and precise by adding that dates such as 14 February , 22 February , 3 March and 11 -12 March and a day or so prior and after all these dates could be very relevant for more care and appropriate strategy at vulnerable regions and locations across the country. It seems the predictive alert was somewhere indicative. There is one more aspect relevant to such tragedy - amount of ex-gratia payment. It needs to be made relevant to the ongoing times and type of tragedy , both as regards the deceased and injured. Let us have some rethinking into this aspect. https://www.theindiapost.com/headline/the-year-2019-astrologically-for-india/
