MNM Chief Kamal Haasan To Contest 2019 Lok Sabha Election

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, who launched his political party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) on Saturday cleared the air over speculations about him contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

He announced his plans of contesting 2019 Lok Sabha elections at an executive meeting of the party in Chennai Haasan said, “I will definitely contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.”

When asked about possibilities of forming an alliance with other parties, Haasan said, “We won’t join hands with parties that are trying to change Tamil Nadu’s DNA,” adding that his party would join hands only with like-minded people.

Haasan had said that he intends to challenge the status quo "that has been plaguing the politics of Tamil Nadu for some time now".

The actor, who recently announced his retirement from acting, said that a committee will soon start selecting candidates for the general elections.

He has been touring in the state in order to strengthen the base of his party. In November, his visited the villages hit by Cyclone Gaja and said to the media that “We will do only what is good for people.”

Haasan formed  Makkal Needhi Maiam in February earlier this year. He had also unveiled the party’s flag that, according to him, represents co-operation between the southern states.
