Meet The New All-Women SWAT Commando Unit Of Delhi Police

Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday formally inducted the all new all-woman SWAT unit of the Delhi Police.

The Delhi Police is the first police force in India to have an all-women Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT). After rigorous training of around 15 months from specialists from India and abroad, 36 women from the northeastern states have been inducted into this squad.

A brainchild of Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, All Women SWAT Commando unit is expert in unarmed combat, ambush & counter ambush, urban operations with knowledge of explosives, IEDs and assault weapons.

Patnaik told the media that the team is ready to take on hostage crises and terror strikes in urban areas. He also said that members of this all-women SWAT team received better ratings at the Police Training College in Jharoda Kalan than their male counterparts.

They are armed with MP5 submachine guns and Glock 21 pistols, members of the force are well-versed in Israeli Krav Maga which is an unarmed combat style. A number of them will be accompanied by anti-terror vans called Parakram.

DCP (Special Cell) Pramod Kushwaha earlier told a newspaper that members of the SWAT team are experts in building interventions, counter ambush and VVIP security.
