Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, soon after coming into power, set up a controversial 'Anti-Romeo Squad' to combat eve-teasing and harassment of women, however less than a year later, several such instances have cropped up.

A 14-year-old girl in Meerut, harassed and stalked by 4 men for months, dropped out of school where she was a student of Class VIII, gave up going to her tuition classes and ultimately committed suicide by setting herself on fire On January 6, although the incident came to light recently.

According to her family, even after she dropped out of school and tuition classes to avoid the 4 men, they managed to gangrape her, the trauma of which led to her dousing herself with kerosene and setting herself on fire. Suffering 80 percent burns, she died 5 days later, after which the family filed an FIR.

The victim's brother, from the Panchgaon Patti village 15 km from Meerut city where they lived, told TOI that the men from neighbouring Gawdi would torment her as she walked to school or to her tuition classes.

"We should've known something was wrong when she suddenly left school," he said.

"Then she wouldn't go for her tuition classes in the evening. These men drove my sister to her death,"  the brother said.

The family alleged that the men, identified as Shobhit, Mohit Kumar, Ankit Singh and Ravi, threatened them not to report the matter to the police.

"Because of that (the threats) we mustered courage to lodge an FIR only after her death, we were too scared to call the cops." the brother said.

"Initially, we told our neighbours that she had burnt herself in an accidental fire while cooking. Later, some local organisations came to our support. It was only then that we managed to go to the police with a complaint," he added.

An FIR has been filed against the accused under IPC sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 376D (gangrape) and 511 (punishment for offences punishable with imprisonment for life).

"Of the four, Ankit Singh has been arrested. Raids are being conducted to nab the others," Rajesh Kumar, superintendent of police (rural areas), said.
