A monkey in Odisha snatched a 16-day-old baby boy from his home in the Cuttack district of Odisha on Saturday, resulting in authorities launching a massive search operation. Sadly, locals found the newborn baby floating in a well the next day when they went to fetch water on Sunday, and discovered that the baby was dead.

The baby had been sleeping next to his mother at their home in the Talabasta village when the monkey snatched the baby and fled. The mother saw the monkey fleeing with her baby and raised an alarm and villagers reported the incident to the authorities.

Forest department and fire services reached the village and subsequently launched a major search operation to trace the baby. According to forest department officials, the task would be difficult.

"As the child has trouble crying, we cannot hear his voice. It has, therefore, become difficult for us to trace him in the forest," said a forest department official who was engaged in the rescue operation.

The official added that 30 forest department personnel, divided into 3 teams led by Damapada Forest Ranger Sangram Keshari Mohanty are combing nearby forests along with the villagers.

In the same area a few days back, several persons were injured in attacks by monkeys, resulting in locals accusing the forest department of inaction against the monkeys despite their repeated complaints.

In the past, unconfirmed reports have shown that children raised amongst monkeys become monkey like themselves, crawling on all fours and growling.
