At least 21 people have been killed and many others injured after a mini-truck they were travelling in fell off of a bridge over the Son River in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district on Tuesday night.

Sidhi district collector Dilip Kumar confirmed the death toll in a statement to ANI, and said "21 people have died in the accident and many have been injured. The injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment."

According to reports, the mini-truck was carrying a marriage party from Singrauli district when the vehicle fell off the Jogdaha bridge near Amelia in Sidhi district around 60-70 foot down onto the dry river bed.

While the death toll had earlier been pegged at 15, the number of casualties increased as more people trapped inside the vehicle were rescued. The district collector and district police chief arrived at the site of the accident and supervised the rescue operations.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed sorrow over the accident and announced assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured.

The road accident in Madhya Pradesh comes a week after 18 people were killed and 15 others injured in a major road accident on the Pune-Satara Highway, when a truck carrying around 40 workers toppled after hitting a divider.
