14 Killed, 12 Injured In Massive Fire At Mumbai's Kamala Mills Compound

At least 14 people, including 12 women have been killed and 12 others injured due to a major fire on late Thursday night at the Kamala Mills compound in Mumbai's Lower Parel that houses several offices and restaurants.

Transmission of several news channels operating from the compound including ET Now, Mirror Now, Zoom & TV9 Marathi was affected reportedly due to damage to equipment

According to initial reports, the fire started around 12:30 AM on Friday at a restaurant Mojo Bistro and spread quickly, with witnesses saying that the entire building was in flames in less than half an hour.

Using more than 6 fire tenders and 4 water tankers the fire department was able to extinguish the fire in 3 hours. The injured were rushed to the King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) 3 km away from the site of the fire.

Senior Mumbai police officer S Jay Kumar said that the cause of the fire was not yet confirmed.

"We have started our investigation... It is only after investigation that we will be able to say anything," he said.

However, an official from the city's fire engine department suspecting that fire safety norms had been flouted by some restaurants in the complex said that the fire could have been started by a short circuit.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena lawmaker Sunil Shinde who reached the hospital called for a "proper inquiry" into the fire.

"Who has given them (restaurants) the licence? They are responsible for this incident," he told reporters.

The 37-acre Kamala Mills compound was once an industrial area but now houses various swanky restaurants making it a popular nightlife destination.
