At least 10 people have been killed after a 4-storey building collapsed near the crowded Sarvate bus stand in Indore on Saturday night. Several others are believed to be trapped, despite a large team of police and fire brigade personnel carrying out rescue operations overnight. A total of 5 people have been brought out, among whom 2 are in critical condition.

According to reports, the building that collapsed was more than 50 years old and in a run-down condition. The building housed the MS Hotel, and the deaths consisted mainly of staff and guests staying in the top 3 floors of the hotel.

Primary investigations into the building collapse state that a heavy vehicle crashed into a weight-bearing pillar of the dilapidated structure after which the entire building collapsed. While several blamed the vehicle for crashing into the building, others opined that if the building was in such a delicate condition, the municipal authorities should have taken preventive action and given notices.

The building was located near the Sarwate bus stand in one of the most crowded part of the city. Several autorickshaws were also parked at the junction, out of which many are feared to be trapped although no exact number has been released.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan tweeted that he is monitoring the rescue efforts, and is deeply pained by the accident.

“We are monitoring the rescue efforts. I pray that everyone survives and those wounded recover soon,” he tweeted.
