Akshay Kumar's Bollywood film 'PadMan' brought discussions of sanitary napkins out of the proverbial closet and made them, as well as menstrual health a topic of conversation.

Incorporating sanitary napkins into politics, Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev on Sunday said that the party would provide free sanitary napkins to women in Meghalaya if they are voted to power in the upcoming assembly elections, reported PTI.

The All India Congress Committee Mahila president said that she had also urged the Centre and the finance minister to exempt GST on sanitary napkins overall.

"If the price is subsidised, it becomes a product that is affordable in the rural market, so private companies take it there," she said.

Dev slammed the BJP for 'not being serious' about the security of women.

"After the (2012) Nirbhaya case, we changed a lot of laws, but the recent NCRB data shows crime against women has still gone up," she said, adding that 60 percent of the Nirbhaya fund was lying "unused".

Ahead of the state assembly elections on February 27, BJP leaders including national party president Amit Shah and Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani have been campaigning in Meghalaya. In the history of the northeastern state, there has not been a single BJP government and the saffron party is hopeful of expanding its footprint in the northeast.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma of the Congress party is hoping to renew a third term as the CM of the state.
