The Triple Talaq Bill, which is high on the government's agenda, is likely to be taken up for discussion in the Lok Sabha as the winter session of Parliament resumes today.

The four-hour debate will begin at 2 pm in the Lok Sabha.

The BJP and the Congress have issued whips to their members in the Lok Sabha asking them to be present during the discussion.

The government considered a law on Triple Talaq after the Supreme Court issued a statement in August last year that the traditional method of Muslim men instantly divorcing their wives by uttering "Talaq" thrice was "unconstitutional" and "arbitrary".

Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is expected to introduce the revised bill.

Under the revised bill, only a woman, or her close relative, can file a police case against her husband. A second amendment allows her to drop the case if the couple reaches a compromise.

A third amendment says the magistrate can decide on releasing the husband on bail only after hearing the wife.

Earlier, the government and the opposition reached an understanding to discuss The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018, that seeks to replace an ordinance issued earlier for protecting the rights of married Muslim women and prohibiting divorce by pronouncing "talaq" by their husbands.
