Loksabha To Discuss Triple Talaq On Thursday, BJP Issues Whip To MPs

The BJP issued a three-line whip to all its MPs asking them to be present in Parliament on Thursday.

The party hopes to pass the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018, famously called the Triple Talaq Bill.

The Bill aims to make the instant divorce practiced among Muslims a penal offense with the provision of three-year jail for the husband.

It was tabled in the Lower House on December 17 in place of an ordinance that was laid out in September this year.

The government was keen to take up the bill for passage last week but could not do so amid protests by Congress and some other parties over various issues including the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the Rafale deal.

The government had to get the ordinance cleared by the parliament failing which it would lapse.

In the lower house though the Government has majority numbers the bill making triple talaq void and illegal will not be easy to pass.

The Centre had enacted certain amendments to the original Bill after it faced serious opposition from various parties in the Lok Sabha as the earlier one did not have an option of applying for bail.

As per Indian law, an ordinance once issued has a lifespan of six months and it ceases to exist if both houses of the Parliament do not replace it with a Bill with approval from both houses within six weeks.
