Landslide Kills 9 People In Tamenglong District Of Manipur

Nine people have been killed in landslides triggered due to constant rain in areas of Manipur's Tamenglong district on Wednesday. Seven bodies have been recovered so far and search operations for the other two is still on.

Three landslides took place between 2.30 am to 3.00 am that killed seven children and a mother and son after some houses of New Salem and Neigailuang village collapsed.

Nongthombam Biren Singh, Chief Minister, Manipur in a tweet said that rescue operations are underway. He tweeted, "I am deeply saddened to know that Nine precious life lost due to landslide at 3 places in Tamenglong Head Quarter, till now 7 bodies have been recovered 2 bodies of children yet to recovered. Rescue operations are on."

Governor of Manipur Najma Heptulla and Union Minister Jitendra Singh also condoled the demise of nine people on twitter.

Massive rains have severely affected life and have caused major destruction of property in the north-eastern states. 17 deaths have been reported in Assam while around 24,000 people are stuck in four districts. The government has deployed security forces for the relief work and medical support in the areas of Tripura, Assam and Manipur.

Landslides in Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland have blocked important routes that have hindered the rescue operations in the affected areas.
