Kolkata: Massive Fire At Medical College, 250 Patients Evacuated

A fire broke out a Medical College and Hospital in Kolkatqa on Wednesday. Around 250 patients were evacuated, however no casualties were reported.

According to the media reports, the fire broke out at the Department Of Pharmacy on the ground floor at around 8:00 am this morning.

Around ten fire tenders and Kolkata Police officers rushed to the spot to smother the fire and at least 250 people had been evacuated and were moved to different blocks. No casualty has been reported as of now but the fire has caused panic in the area.

Reportedly, the fire department officials said, " At present, the oxygen cylinders kept in the storeroom of the hospital are a matter of concern as the room is close to the epicenter of the fire.''

Smoke enveloped the building and many patients reportedly tried to jump out of the window in order to save themselves.

Local media reports few of them being taken out of the building with their saline drips. Few patients could also be seen lying on the floor waiting for help.

Established in 1948, Calcutta National Medical College is one of the oldest hospitals in the subcontinent. The cause of the fire and extent of damage are yet to be ascertained.
