3 Killed, Several Injured As Explosion In Chemical Factory Sparks Fire In Maharashtra's Palghar

At least 3 people have been killed and 11 others injured after a massive explosion in a chemical factory in the Palghar district of Maharashtra triggered a fire in 5 factory units nearby, on Thursday night. Police, fire and medical teams were called in after the blast in Palghar's Tarapur town, and the entire area has been cordoned off as the forces try to extinguish the fire on Friday morning.

SP, Palghar, said, “Fire has come down, but few areas are still burning. Six factories were affected by fire. Novaphene, Unimax, Prachi, Arti, Bharat Rasayan, Darbar. All chemical factories. During the search operation, three unidentified dead bodies have been found at Arti industries site. There may be more casualties. Search and rescue operation is going on.”

Initial reports suggest that the blast occurred when a boiler containing industrial solvent burst under high temperature and pressure due to irregular storage. The impact of the blast could be felt even 8-10 kilometres away from the site, shattering windows in buildings 3 km away, including the windows on the Boisar Police station.

The Novaphene Specialties Private Limited factory, where the blast took place manufactures speciality chemicals and cosmetic preservatives, dealing with high purity acid and acid anhydrides. The fire then spread to adjoining factories, Aarti Drugs, Prachi Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd, Bharat Vasayan and Unimax.

According to locals, at least 22 tankers with varying capacities between 100-200 litres burst due to the fire.
