Karbi Anglong: 2 Lynched On Suspicion Of Being Child Lifters

Two men were lynched in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam. The deceased were suspected to be child lifters. Nipotal Das, a sound engineer and Abhijeet Nath, a businessman were spotted at Panjari Kachari village at around 8 pm on Friday.

V Siva Prasad Ganjala, Superintendent of police, Karbi Anglong said “villagers, suspecting them to be child lifters, surrounded the black Scorpio vehicle in which the duo was travelling and started thrashing them, resulting in their death. They said they were on their way to a waterfall in Kangthilangso, but had not intimated anybody or taken a local guide.”

In a video floating on social media platforms, Nilotpal, is seen pleading to his attackers. He was saying “Don’t kill me…please don’t beat me. I am an Assamese. Believe me, I am speaking the truth. My father’s name is Gopal Chandra Das and mother’s name is Radhika Das…please let me go.”

Additional Director General of police, law and order, Mukesh Agarwal, who rushed to Karbi Anglong after the incident, said, “Once the rumours start, they take a few days to die down.”He added that there have been multiple incidents where people have been attacked by locals in the last few days in Sonitpur, West Karbi Anglong, and Nagaon.

Incidents of the same nature were seen in the year 2016, the lower Assam districts of Chirang, Darrang, Baksa, Sonitpur saw several attacks after similar rumours of the presence of child lifters, leaving four people dead.
