Kanpur SP Critical After Consuming Poison Dies In Hospital, Inquiry Launched

Superintendent of Police, Kanpur Surendra Kumar Das who was in critical condition for a past few days, after allegedly consuming poison at his residence, passed away on Sunday.

Surendra Kumar Das, an officer of the 2014 batch, was posted in Kanpur as Superintendent of Police City (East) and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital after consuming poisonous substance on Wednesday.

An inquiry had been launched into the matter and senior police officials had told the media that the deceased was reeling under family problems for the past few weeks. Several organs in his body had stopped working, Dr Rajesh Agarwal of the hospital where Kumar was being treated told the media.

A preliminary investigation had revealed traces of poison in Kumar's body at the time he was brought in to the care of medical professionals. It is being presumed that he may have committed suicide since he was burdened with family problems.

Kumar had joined his posting in Kanpur on August 3 of this year. He was an electrical engineer by education. According to media reports, he had reportedly left behind a two-page suicide note.

State Director General of Police (DGP), O P Singh had visited the hospital on Saturday. Senior police officers including DGP, ADG (Law and Order) and others have expressed grief over the demise of the officer.
