Signalling the ushering in of a younger generation of Congress leaders, the 46-year-old Jyotiraditya Scindia is likely to be announced as the chief ministerial candidate for Congress party in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh elections in 2018, senior leader Kamal Nath said.

Senior Congress party leader and former Union minister Kamal Nath said, "I have said it and you must have also read that Scindiaji should be the CM candidate”.

The selection of Scindia as the CM face puts to end speculations on who would be put up by the Congress to take on BJP's Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh since 2005.

Congress would look towards putting an end to BJP's rule in the state which has been continuing for the previous 5 terms since 2003 when BJP's Uma Bharti defeated Congress's Digvijaya Singh.

The top contenders for the CM nomination in Madhya Pradesh were Scindia and Nath himself and it was expected that Congress Vice President himself would make a formal announcement confirming the candidate after returning from the US.

However, as Rahul Gandhi concludes his 3-day campaigning visit to Gujarat which is also set to go for polls, other Congress leaders are making their efforts in Madhya Pradesh.

Senior leaders including Digvijaya Singh, state unit chief Arun Yadav, Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia are expected to pay tribute to former minister Mahendra Singh Kalukheda at Ratlam, while Digvijaya would be embarking on a Narmada Yatra from Saturday. The Narmada Yatra would witness Digvijaya, a former chief minister of MP, visit more than 100 constituencies in the state ahead of the assembly polls.

An official statement from the Congress party confirming Jyotiraditya Scindia's candidature as MP CM is yet to be released.

Disregarding the candidature of Scindia, BJP spokesperson Deepak Vijayvargiya said, “Nath presently is an MP so his views can’t be taken as the Congress party’s views.”
