Inaugurating a 24x7 generic medicine store at a government-run hospital in eastern Maharashtra's Chandrapur area, Minister of State for Home Affairs Hansraj Ahir on Monday lashed out at senior doctors missing from the event.

Ahir, who represents Chandrapur in the Lok Sabha, wondered whether it was appropriate for doctors to go on leave when a "democratically-elected" minister was on a visit, adding that if "these people" didn't believe in democracy they should join the Naxals and the government would shoot them down.

"What do the Naxals want? They don't want democracy... So these people (the absent doctors) don't want democracy, then they should join the Naxals. Why are you here? Then (once you join the Naxals) we will pump you with bullets, why you are dispensing pills here?" said Ahir in Marathi using the double meaning of the word 'goli' which means both a pill and a bullet.

"The mayor came, the deputy mayor came but what stopped the doctors from coming for the event?" an angry Ahir asked.

According to reports, the district civil surgeon, Dr Uday Nawade, and dean of the medical college, Dr S S More did not attend the event as they had prior commitments and claimed they were informed of Ahir's event at the last minute.

Chandrapur is one of the 4 districts in Maharashtra that have been identified by the central government as being affected by Left-Wing Extremism.
