Gujarat minister Kunvarji Bavaliya, who resigned from the Congress to join BJP earlier this year, retained his Jasdan Assembly seat in Rajkot district by 19985 votes against Avsar Nakiya of the Congress(70,200 votes) on Sunday.

After the exit of Bawaliya, the Congress fielded another strong candidate from the Koli community, Avshar Nakia, who is known to have a strong ground connect, which analysts had said will help him give a good fight to the BJP.

Nakiya, a Rajkot district panchayat member who had once worked closely with Bavaliya, a five-time MLA, contested the assembly election for the first time in his life. He conceded defeat at the end of the sixteenth round.

The polling for Jasdan and Kolebira (ST) Assembly constituencies were held on December 20.

The constituency had 2.32 lakh registered voters. The counting of votes was held at Model School in Jasdan on 14 tables and votes were counted in 19 rounds.

Congress has not won in Kolebira in last 15 years. With today's win, the BJP has increased its seats in the Gujarat Assembly, touching 100 in the 182-member House.

His supporters celebrated his win at BJP head office.

According to media reports, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the big victory in Jasdan, which is primarily a rural seat, is a sign that BJP will win all 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat.
