Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid was on Thursday night transferred from his position of DGP, replaced by Director General of Police (Prisons) Dilbagh Singh who will manage the role till a regular appointment is made.

Dilbagh Singh, a 1987-batch officer, had been made head of the prison department in March after the infamous escape of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Naved Jhatt.

SP Vaid, a 1986-batch IPS officer appointed as Jammu and Kashmir DGP in December 2016, has meanwhile been posted as the Transport Commissioner ahead of his retirement which is due in October 2019.

The transfers were announced by the Civil Secretariat Home Department of the Jammu and Kashmir government.

According to reports, differences between the Governor's administration and SP Vaid after he was divested of crucial administrative powers and authority was given to ADG Law and Order Munir Khan was one of the reasons for his removal from the post.

Another reason is considered to be the release of a terrorist's father in exchange of kidnapped family members of the state's policemen last week.

Last week, terrorists in south Kashmir had abducted 3 policemen and 8 relatives of policemen who were released after the police released family members of terrorists, including the father of Hizbul Mujahideen "commander" Riaz Naikoo.

Since June, Jammu and Kashmir has been under Governor's Rule after the BJP ended its alliance with the PDP. Satyapal Malik was appointed as the Jammu and Kashmir Governor last month, replacing NN Vohra.
