International Women’s Day 2019: Better The Balance, Better The World

International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8. It is a day to recognize the extraordinary acts of women and to stand together, as a united force, to advance gender equality around the world.

It celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women in all spheres of life. This day also marks the call to action for accelerating gender parity.

The past year saw unprecedented global movement for women's rights, equality, and justice including #MeToo campaign were taken up throughout the world on issues ranging from sexual harassment, femicide, equal pay, women's political representation, among others.

The 2019 theme is ‘Think equal, build smart, innovate for change’ which focuses on innovative ways in which we can advance gender equality and the empowerment of women, particularly in the areas of social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure.

The International Women's Day 2019 campaign theme of #BalanceforBetter is a call-to-action for driving gender balance across the world.

Historically, purple, green and white are colors associated with IWD. Purple signifies justice and dignity. Green symbolizes hope. White represents purity. (However, white has become obsolete as associating "purity" with women is a controversial concept).
