External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj once again delivered good news as she tweeted that Father Tom Uzhunnalil, an Indian Catholic priest abducted from Yemen by the Islamic State militant group in March 2016 has been rescued.

Hailing from Kerala, Father Tom was abducted by the Islamic State when they attacked an old-age home in the southern Yemeni city of Aden run by the Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity. After his abduction, Swaraj held extensive talks with the Deputy Prime Minister of Yemen regarding his safety.

Efforts had been on to secure Father Tom's release and Swaraj had informed the Parliament that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to various countries to look for contacts that could be established in Yemen.

In Parliament, Swaraj had updated that it took more time to secure the release of people that have been held captive and asked the MPs to keep faith in the government's efforts to rescue Father Tom.

An earlier video released allegedly by the Islamic State, had shown Father Tom saying that ‘nothing was being done for his release since he was Indian’.

"I am very sad that nothing has been done seriously in my regard," Father Tom said in the video, adding "If I were a European priest, I would have been taken more seriously. I am from India. I am perhaps not considered as of much value."

Sushma Swaraj is a saviour of sorts for Indians trapped in unsavoury conditions.
