Incidents Of Rape Cannot Be Stopped If Even Lord Ram Comes: UP BJP MLA Surendra Singh

Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA Surendra Singh, sparked controversy over his statements to media on Saturday, when he said that incidents of rape cannot be stopped even if Lord Ram comes on earth.

"I can only say one thing that incidents of rapes cannot be stopped even if Lord Ram comes on earth. Such incidents are natural pollution of society," Singh said speaking to media in Ballia about the rising rape incidents in the state.

"It is people's responsibility to treat others as their family, as their sisters. We can only control it through values, not the constitution," the BJP MLA added.

As controversy arose over the statements of BJP MLA Surendra Singh, the UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi defended him.

"The MLA belongs to a rural belt and at times get misinterpreted because of his habit of not communicating properly," Tripathi said.  

"He meant to say that good values are very important to curb crime against women. The government is very strict over incidents involving women and we have taken a lot of initiatives to provide them better security," he added, referring to Singh's statements.

BJP MLA Surendra Singh also came under controversy for comparing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with 'Shurpanakha', the sister of demon king Ravana from the 'Ramayana' Hindu epic. He was also in support of gangrape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar despite national outrage over the Unnao rape case in which Sengar was a key accused.
