In a bid to woo farmers ahead of the state assembly elections, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Saturday announced free electricity for more than 12 lakh farmers for up to Rs 10,000 for a year on their agricultural electricity connection.

The scheme will come into effect from the November 2018 billing month for general category rural farmers and will be available in the form of grants through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Rajasthan Energy Department officials said.

To avail of the scheme, farmers would have to pay the bill first after which a maximum amount of Rs 833 per month would be deposited in their bank accounts, officials said. Orders have already been issued to power distribution companies in Jaipur, Ajmer and Jodhpur by the Energy Department.

Senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot slammed CM Raje, alleging that she was attempting to 'lure' farmers as the term of the BJP government in Rajasthan came to an end.

"She announced free electricity for farmers only after the Congress announced to give free power to farmers at 'Charbhuja Kisan Sammelan'", he said.

"What's the meaning of making this announcement an hour before the implementation of code of conduct by this outgoing government?" Gehlot asked.

"Why she didn't give free electricity to farmers in her five-year tenure?" he said.

"Farmers will not be lured by this announcement," Gehlot added.

The Election Commission of India had on Saturday announced the election dates for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana state assembly elections. Rajasthan elections are set to take place on December 7, along with Telangana. Counting of votes for all the states will take place on December 11.
