Triple Talaq petitioner Shayara Bano on Sunday hailed the government's concern about the Uniform Civil Code and the concern of the BJP government towards Muslims, expressing her interest in joining the BJP if she got an opportunity.

"Our govt is concerned about Uniform Civil Code and thinking about the affects of polygamy. Looking at the concern of BJP govt towards Muslims I have decided that if I get an opportunity to join BJP I will definitely join then," Bano said.

“I want to work for women’s rights while working for the party (BJP),” she said.

Shayara Bano, a 45-year-old from Uttarakhand was one of the leaders in the legal battle against triple talaq, the Muslim practice of divorce allowing a husband to divorce his wife by uttering the word 'talaq' three times.

Uttarakhand BJP state president Ajay Bhatt confirmed that Bano, with her father Iqbal Ahmed met with him on Friday, expressing her interest in joining the party.

"She is a global personality now and we would be more than happy to welcome her into the party,” said Bhatt.

In 2016, Bano had approached the Supreme COurt demanding that the talaq-e-biddat pronounced by her husband be declared as void, after marriage of 15 years was unilaterally dissolved by her husband property dealer Rizwan Ahmed who sent her a ‘talaqnama’ while she was visiting her parents.

Petitions from 4 other women were tagged with the petition filed by Bano and the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) became the 6th petitioner in the case.

In a landmark ruling in August 2017, the Supreme Court ruled that the practice of instant triple talaq is unconstitutional.

Praising the BJP, Bano said, “It was with the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that we got justice.”
